Some of us don't have that elusive flair for fashion and attempt to put together a stunning costume for a special occasion which falls flat on its fashion face! How do the models do it? How does my sister do it? Sometimes, the question is not so much what to wear, but what not to wear. Let's take a look at some of the fashion caveats that will help you avoid inappropriate selections.
Let's say you've been invited to a wedding. Such a special occasion warrants a special costume, right? The caveat here is that you don't want to outshine the wedding party! Although your choice of a shimmery, sequined shawl over that fabulous dress may be beautiful and well suited to a hot dinner date, it won't work for the wedding. This costume is, in fact, too lovely. You'll garner a lot of attention, but your hosts may feel you're trying to upstage them. A classic case of what not to wear.
How about the hot dinner date? Maybe your date is the conservative type. Wanting to impress him with your stateliness, you opt for a lovely wool suit and a string of pearls. Guess what? This is another what not to wear mistake. Albeit conservative, a sexy dress that's not too revealing, paired with high heels and delicate, sparkly jewelry will make him proud to be with such a dazzling lady.
Today, your fashion quandary is what to wear for a lunch with your girlfriends at the boardwalk. This outing is not about impressing men, but a casual date with friends. Girls. Don't let your insecurity show by dressing to the nines. You'll only alienate your friends and make them feel underdressed. Go casual and cute, as befits the occasion. Tall, shiny boots and a short skirt are the epitome of what not to wear here.
Office dress is often misconstrued by the aspiring fashionisto. At work, it's important that you dress professionally. Unless today's the office Christmas party, stick with classic and unpretentious styles for daily wear. Even if there's someone new at work who's caught your eye, resist the temptation to look the vamp during office hours. Vampy costumes in the office are definitely what not to wear. Save it for the date.
In summary, knowing what not to wear becomes natural if you take your companions and hosts into your consideration. If your costume may make others uncomfortable for whatever reason, modify your costume choice such that you'll look in place while still being attractive.
